Proper Moisturizing With Oily Skin Moisturizer
Proper skin care involves cleansing, toning and moisturizing the skin. But does this golden rule also apply for oily skin? Can people with oily skin also use oily skin moisturizer, or should they stay away from it totally?
You may think that people with oily skin should avoid moisturizing their skin – since moisturizing can make the skin oilier. But this is simply a myth. Moisturizers do not add to the skin’s oil content but to its water content – and that is something altogether different.

Why Moisturize The Skin?
Regardless of your skin type, you will still need to use a facial moisturizer. In fact, moisturizing is something that should be done on a regular basis. The only catch here is that you will need to find the right skin moisturizer for your skin. Oily skin needs a moisturizer in order to keep it hydrated. Moisturizer for oily skin matches the skin’s type. It is not greasy and does not clog the pores. It only adds to the skin’s moisture level without causing an excess production of sebum.
How To Choose The Right Moisturizer
Here’s a rule of thumb of oily skin care: choose something oil free. Do not use oil based moisturizer, or those that contain petroleum or mineral oil. They are not easily absorbed by the skin and they leave a thin film on the layer. This causes clogged pores. Choose a water-based moisturizer or an oily skin moisturizer that comes in gel form. These give the skin the hydration that it needs, without causing greasiness.
Moisturizing Skin With Acne
Along with oily skin comes acne treatment for oily skin. If you have acne, you may be using acne treatments like Benzoyl Peroxide, Retinol and Accutane – and these are drying ingredients. Thus, there is a need to moisturize your skin even more.
More Oily Skin Care Tips
If you have combination oily skin, then you may need to use the appropriate moisturizer for both skin types. You may need to use a thicker cream moisturizer on the dry parts of the skin, but you may want to stick to your oily skin moisturizer for the dry parts of the skin. Make sure that you keep this moisturizer on the oily parts of the skin, and apply the heavy moisturizer carefully on the dry parts of the skin.
Aside from making use of moisturizer for oily skin care, it is still of great improtance to take care of the skin. Make sure that you keep the skin clean by cleansing it twice a day. Avoid overwashing since washing more than recommended can dry out the skin. Use a light cleanser.
After washing your face, follow up with a toner or astringent. Use this in between washes when your skin starts to feel greasy.
And of course, lastly, never forget your oily skin moisturizer. Use a moisturizer with SPF during the day, or when you go out of the house. This helps protect your skin from sun damage. At night, use your oil-free moisturizer or a medicated moisturizer if you have acne. Take care, moisturize without the shine and grease.
